1 killed, 1 injured in shooting along Hayes Street

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — One man is dead and another is wounded following a shooting in Midtown Nashville early Saturday morning, according to police.

The Metro Nashville Police Department said 32-year-old Christopher Cheeks was killed and a 29-year-old man was injured in the shooting, which took place just before 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 20 in an alleyway between Hayes Street and Church Street.

Authorities said Cheeks was in the alleyway with some friends when three men started interacting with the group.

According to officials, the 29-year-old victim reported the group was “hanging out cordially for some time before the three suspects attempted to rob his group of friends,” at which point the victim heard gunfire and realized he had been shot.

Police said the 29-year-old, Cheeks, and their other friends ran off in separate directions following the shooting.

The 29-year-old was reportedly discovered on Church Street and Cheeks was found in the parking garage of the Hayes Street Hotel. Both victims were brought to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where Cheeks died, authorities said.

Officials said nobody else appeared to have been hit by the gunfire.

On Saturday evening, the MNPD announced detectives from the Homicide Unit were “working strong, active leads” in the case. However, no additional details have been released about the suspects or the incident.
