Jennifer Garner's idyllic family life falls apart in the trailer for 'The Tribes of Palos Verdes' (exclusive)
Money can’t buy you love or happiness, and neither can a new house on the beach in a Southern California surfing town. That’s one lesson at the heart of the new drama The Tribes of Palos Verdes (watch the exclusive trailer above), starring Jennifer Garner as a matriarch whose family begins to crumble when they move to a beautiful new waterfront home.
It Follows breakout Maika Monroe plays Medina, a teenager whose point of view shows us both the breathtaking beauty of the SoCal locale and the fragile appearance of a nuclear clan in crisis. The latter is brought on by her father (Weeds alum Justin Kirk)’s feelings for another woman, her brother (Cody Fern)’s turn to drug use, and her mother (Garner)’s emotional breakdown.
(Garner characters are having a rough year, domestically speaking: In May’s Wakefield, she played spouse to Bryan Cranston’s eponymous character, who ditched his family to secretly live in the apartment above their garage.)
As for Medina, readers of Joy Nicholson’s bestselling book on which the film is based know that she turns to the waves for escape and self-discovery.
Adapted for the screen by Karen Croner (Admission) and directed by Emmett Malloy and Brendan Malloy (Out Cold, Variety’s “10 Directors to Watch for 2016”), the film also stars Alicia Silverstone, Goran Visnjic, and Elisabeth Röhm.
The Tribes of Palos Verdes premiered Friday at the at the Hamptons International Film Festival and hits theaters and VOD Dec. 1.
