Zoë Kravitz Says Her Father Lenny’s Longest Relationship Is With See-Through Shirts

Of the myriad ways in which Zoë Kravitz had an unconventional childhood, the most visible may well have been her stylish folks’ kooky wardrobes. It’s hard enough to be an adolescent, much less one whose parents—rockstar Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet—tend to run errands in leather slacks and supernaturally oversized scarves.

“My parents were very young and they dressed really crazy—see-through shirts and velvet pants and stuff,” Kravitz told GQ back in 2022. “I had this fantasy about just having a parent that wore a button-up top.”

These days, Zoë Kravitz, now 35, has followed in her parents’ footsteps as a risk-taking fashion plate. But those memories, as she mentioned in a speech during her dad’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony this week, still haunt her.

“I’ve seen you change in the most beautiful ways. I’ve seen the way you stay the same in the most important ways,” she said, standing beside her father. “I’ve seen your incredible dedication to your art. But mostly, I’ve seen through your shirts. According to my dad, if it doesn’t expose your nipples, it’s not a shirt.”

As Lenny laughed next to her, Zoë continued. “Sure, it used to embarass me when you picked me up from school as a kid—but I gotta say, at this point, I respect it. You really do pull it off,” she conceded, before delivering the zinger: “Your relationship with the knitted shirt is probably your longest one, and it works.” (The crowd howled at that last bit; sprinkling on some extra salt, she added: “You two make each other better.”)

Thankfully for Zoë, Lenny did not wear a sheer shirt to receive his star on the Walk of Fame, opting instead for a dark, flared pinstripe suit by Saint Laurent with a half-buttoned silk blouse underneath. His daughter wore Saint Laurent, too: a slinky two-toned dress.
