Watch: Surfers Find Mysterious Dead Whale Floating Outside Lineup

Ben Gravy’s vlogs are typically filled with fun and giddy, grom-like elation.

He’s usually hunting weird novelty waves – that’s sorta his schtick, in case you haven’t noticed – like in the Netherlands, Belgium, calving glaciers in Alaska, or building his own makeshift wavepool, all the while smiling and laughing along the way.

But this one hits a little bit different.

Captioning the video, Gravy wrote:

“My VLOG's are usually fun filled & joy driven, but today we come across some pretty heavy situations. The wild fires on Maui & after spending a very happy few days with Skudin Surf we ended up happening upon a dead whale floating offshore after we had just caught some waves. This is a truly tragic situation & I hope that something changes. Until then please donate, share or simply pray for Maui & tat our sea life will stop dying, because of decisions that we make. Thank you for your time & thanks for watching. – Ben”

After a day with the kids at Skudin Surf in New York, Gravy and the crew come across something floating offshore. Looks like a half-sunken boat? Nope, it’s a dead whale.

“It’s terribly sad that I had to end today’s video with a dead whale,” says Gravy. “But that’s what happened. We spent two epic days with Skudin Surf, having an amazing time, spreading joy, and at the end, surfing the outer sandbar, we came across a dead whale.

“Two years ago, I think I remember hearing about one or two dead whales my whole life. Trust me, I don’t want to get political about this at all, this is just an honest take…but the only thing that’s changed is that they’re installing offshore windmills. There’s so many places to put windmills; I don’t know why they chose the ocean. I just don’t want to have baby whales dying off the east coast.”

Additionally, on another serious note, Gravy discusses the devastating wildfires and the ongoing relief efforts in Maui during this vlog. His recommendation to lend support is New York for Maui; here’s the link to donate.
