Surfing Rare Storm Waves in Belgium (Video)

For Ben Gravy, surfing looks a little different.

He’s not looking to score the best waves possible; rather, his mission in life is to find the weirdest, most novelty surf sessions on earth, like glaciers, cargo ship wakes, etc.

Gravy’s latest mission? Belgium.

“Surfline’s claiming seven feet at seven [seconds],” Gravy says in the video above. “20 to 37 mile an hour winds from the southwest. It’s gonna be somethin’.”

Does he score?

In Ben Gravy terms: yes.

The waves are mediocre, at best. Pretty much what you’d expect from a heavily-shadowed country with a coastline of only 65 kilometers (aka 40 miles). But the wave quality isn’t the point; not for Gravy. It's the experience of something new, different.

“What a pleasant surprise,” Gravy says after the session. “There were a couple waves out there. But the tide came up – and there’s like a 12-foot tide swing here – and it kinda went flat.”

Captioning the video, Gravy wrote:

“It's been an absolute trip traveling around to new countries and seeing what their surf cultures are like. When I tried surfing storm waves in Belgium ut [sic] was no different! Pleasantly surprised by what we found this European surf trip has been an absolute blast. Thank you Nub Nation for making this the most fun & entertaining job in the world! FOR THE DREAM!! – Ben”

Sounds like he’s off to the Netherlands next.

Not much surfing there, either, last time we checked.

But Gravy will find something.

Perhaps a boat wake session on the Amsterdam canals through the Red Light?

Stay tuned to find out.
