United Airlines wants to help young travelers save money on flights with a special discount.

Through Sept. 30, the carrier is offering a minimum of 5 percent savings for travelers ages 18 to 23. To qualify, they must create a free MileagePlus frequent flyer account and enter their birthdate. United will verify one’s age with travel documents, such as a passport or driver’s license, that must be uploaded online or via its mobile app.

The 5 percent discount will be applied anytime an eligible traveler searches for a domestic flight on United or United Express, as well as flights between the U.S. and select international destinations — even on partner airlines like Air Canada.

“Whether young travelers are booking festival flights, solidifying summer plans, or reuniting with their college crew, we’re excited to help them see the world with an exclusive discount on United Economy and Basic Economy seats for MileagePlus members ages 18-23,” a spokesperson from the airline shared with T+L.

United opens its flight schedule for booking 331 days in advance. Young adult travelers can book tickets with the discount anytime until then, so long as tickets are booked by the promotion end date of Sept. 30. However, the discount is only eligible on the base fare of the flight, excluding government taxes, baggage fees, and more.

The deal gets even sweeter for United cardholders, who get access to even more benefits like bonus miles on flights, priority boarding, and a free checked bag with their discounted ticket. All travelers can earn and redeem rewards through the United MileagePlus program, which recently added a miles-pooling feature with friends and family.

United is the first major domestic carrier to offer an ongoing discount for younger travelers. International airlines Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines, which happen to be partners with United, offer similar flight discounts and benefits just for university-age students. And for rail travelers, Amtrak offers a 15 percent discount to students ages 17 to 24.
