You Should Totally (Not) Buy One Punch Man World’s Big Character Pack

Crunchyroll’s new One Punch Man World game, from the makers of Tower of Fantasy, is live now, and developer Perfect World is offering a special discount for the free-to-play game. You can get a $1,000 character pack with a guaranteed Super Super Rare character – official designation, not sarcasm – for $99.99 (thanks, VG 24/7).

On the surface, that sounds… well, not great, but not out of keeping with most free-to-play and gacha-based games. Honkai: Star Rail and Genshin Impact both have in-game currency packs that cost $99.99, and Marvel Snap and Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel get close with packs that cost roughly $90, which is a little ickier than Genshin Impact, since Snap and Yu-Gi-Oh have player-versus-player modes.

Then there’s the likes of Star Citizen, a space game that I’m almost positive doesn’t really exist. Lots of people are excited for it, though, enough to shell out $20,000 or more on customized ships they can maybe one day fly in the game, if, y’know, it ever releases.

The thing is, all these games are transparent about their costs. You know you’re spending $100 in Star Rail on a chance to walk away with absolutely nothing, and after 14 years of development with no clear vision, you probably know Star Citizen’s never going to let you fly your car-priced ship in anything other than a fancy beta.

Perfect World probably won’t ever charge $,1000 for One Punch Man World’s Super Super Rare character pack, and that’s the issue. Businesses using fake urgency to push consumers into making purchases is hardly new, though it is exceptionally sleazy and even illegal in some countries. That goes double for One Punch Man World when you consider Crunchyroll’s track record for shutting games down after several months.

However clever Perfect World might think it’s being, fans aren’t falling for it on Reddit.

“This is just the "walmart" effect,” one user wrote. “(Other retail stores do it as well I just kno walmart LOVES doing it). U make up a price that was never gonna be true or happen then say "hey we marked it down so buy now before it goes back to full price!" And it gets the dumb people but alot of people dnt do it.”

“90% off? That is basically free for me. The publisher really know how to treat their consumers handsomely,” another said, before adding “/s” at the end, a shorthand for saying “I’m serious” that people use when they are very much not serious.

Maybe a SSR character is exactly what you need, and hey, I've dropped money on HoYoverse's games before as well. Just don't feel the urge to hurry and get this so-called value before the discount ends. It probably won't end, and on the off chance it does, it's probably a good idea to think over it a few times before dropping $1,000 on a game that may not even be around 12 months from now.
