Things to do in Kansas City on Memorial Day Weekend

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Memorial Day weekend is here! Whether you want to recognize the holiday or soak up the sun, there are multiple events to attend.

Here are 12 events going on this weekend — May 24 through May 27 — that are worth checking out.

Celebration at the Station

Enjoy the official start of summer with the largest free Memorial Day weekend event in the Midwest. The Kansas City Symphony will perform patriotic favorites, followed by fireworks at Union Station.

The event is free to attend and starts at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Disney 100 opens at Union Station

The magical world of Disney is on full display in a new exhibit opening Friday at Union Station in Kansas City. There are more than 250 artifacts detailing the rise of Walt Disney and how he became the most successful animator ever. It’s interactive, as you can watch movie clips and hear classic songs.

The Disney 100 exhibit opens Friday and runs through the end of November. Tickets range from $18.50 to $25. Go to unionstation.org to buy tickets.

Fourth Fridays in downtown Olathe

Olathe Fourth Fridays in the heart of downtown Olathe. The event will feature live music, food trucks, face painters, kids’ activities, car shows and more. This is a free, family-friendly event. The Stolen Winnebagos will be performing on Friday

Oceans of Fun Opening Day

The largest outdoor water park in the Midwest, Oceans of Fun, begins its summer season on Saturday. A ticket gets you into Oceans of Fun along with Worlds of Fun. A day pass is $36.99, and a season pass is $89.

Oceans of Fun is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Worlds of Fun is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Lee’s Summit Music in the Park

Enjoy a free summer concert on Friday in Howard Station Park in Lee’s Summit. The Southern Nights Band will perform this Friday.

The concert starts at 6:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating.

Blue Surf Bay Waterpark opens to public

After nearly four years of planning and 18 months of construction, the wait is finally over for the opening of the new Blue Surf Bay Waterpark in Blue Springs.

Blue Surf Bay features a 40-foot slide tower with multiple slides, a lazy river with a special action channel, a wave-ball pool with an attached activity pool, a play structure for younger children, and a double surf simulator that allows visitors to try knee-boarding or stand-up surfing.

Barbie Truck Dreamhouse Tour in KC

Those who are fans of Barbie might be happy to hear that the Barbie Truck Dreamhouse is set to roll into the Kansas City area Memorial Weekend.

The truck will be stationed at Town Center Plaza starting May 25.

The truck is filled with a wide range of items, including clothes, home glassware, and Barbie accessories. Many of these items showcase Barbie’s iconic silhouette or her name.

Lee’s Summit Fourth Fridays Art Walk

Enjoy local artist exhibits and live music performances inside and outside of our participating shops and restaurants. The city’s theme for May is “Art Grows Here”

Free kids activities include flower pot decorating, veggie art prints and rock painting. The event goes from 5 to 8 p.m.

Jackson County lake beaches open

Jackson County lake beaches are set to open this weekend, on Saturday, May 25, for the summer season. They will be open seven days a week through August 10, and then weekends only through Labor Day.

The hours are 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. on weekends and 1 p.m. – 7 p.m. on weekdays. Admission is $9 for adults, and $7 for children aged 3 to 15 and seniors over 65.

KC Parks & Rec pool season opens

It’s heating up and local pools and splash pads are getting ready to open as summer is just around the corner for families in Kansas City.

Kansas City Parks and Recreation said it will have five outdoor pools opening on May 25. They will be open daily from noon to 7 p.m. through Aug. 18. Admission is $5.

Pete Davidson Rehab Tour at Uptown Theater

World-famous comedian and Saturday Night Live alum Pete Davidson is bringing his nationwide tour to Kansas City.

Davidson will bring his “Rehab Tour” to Uptown Theatre in Kansas City on Sunday. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets start at $60. Click here to buy tickets.

Breed Meet Up: Human Names at Bar K

Bring your dog with a human name to Bar K this Sunday and enjoy some exclusive offers. You can get half-price draft beers and $5 off your first dog entry fee.

The human name meet-up is from 3 to 6 p.m.

Ninja Training Obstacle Tour

The Ninja Training Tour is a two-hour guided hike through wooded trails along the bluffs of the Kansas River. This is the first weekend that the tour will start for the season.

The course has obstacles such as the great walls, bus cargo climb, balance beams, hurdles, rope climb, tractor tire jumps, walk across teeter-totters, A-frame, tire toss, high knee tires, 7-story stairs, bear crawl, gravel bluffs, tube crawl, peak jumps, our famous vertigo bus and many more.
