Including a classic pair of jeans and celebrity-worn shoes.
This spring surfaced a number of new, exciting trends: Kitten heels are officially the shoe of the season, trench coats have never been more in, hot pants with tights are a thing, and capris might just be back. It’s kind of a lot to take in, so I was desperate to get a second opinion on what trends I should actually be shopping for; fortunately, Queer Eye’s Tan France was willing to lend his expertise.
In partnership with Citi Shop, a deals-hunting browser extension he recommends adding to your laptop and phone, France shared the five spring and summer trends he expects to see everywhere with InStyle. Below, shop his recommendations, including the vintage-inspired jeans that reminded him denim can be comfortable, a classic color he “can’t stop” wearing, and the trending shoes he deemed “beautiful.”
Straight-Leg Jeans
Levi’s Ribcage Straight-Ankle Jeans, $42 (Originally $80); amazon.com
Mother the Rambler Raw-Hem Straight-Leg Jean, $238; nordstrom.com
Wide-leg and baggy jeans dominated 2023, but France told me that this year is all about “getting back to classic clothing.” We’re starting off with straight-leg jeans, a style he said is comfortable and “works for everyone.” Not only that, but they’re surprisingly versatile: Cindy Crawford recently rocked a pair with a blazer and vintage tee, Pamela Anderson wore hers with a sexy pair of heels, and an InStyle writer just shared that she repeatedly pairs the style with classic white sneakers.
Get the look by grabbing this pair of Levi’s while they're on sale for just $42 at Amazon — shoppers rave they’re “so comfortable and flattering.” Madewell’s best-selling ‘90s jeans are also a great option, but if you’re willing to spend a bit more, I personally love (and have been living in) Frame’s Slouchy Straight Jean, which offers the perfect lived-in feel and look.
Crochet
Gap Crochet Pull-On Midi Skirt, $63 (Originally $80); gap.com
Madewell Crochet-Knit Crewneck Sweater Tank, $70; madewell.com
J.Crew Crochet Cropped Cardigan Sweater, $100 (Originally $198); jcrew.com
Guest in Residence Crochet Tunic, $395; guestinresidence.com
Crochet is one of the major trends France plans to embrace this summer. “We’ve really started to see [it] come back,” he says. He noted it’s a particularly popular bag trend (this one from Amazon is just $15), but shared that one of his favorite styles is a “really chic” mini dress from Gigi Hadid’s Guest in Residence collection. While the crocheted tunic is something you’ll definitely want to rock beachside this summer, I even love the idea of wearing it now with a pair of straight-leg trousers underneath. And if you want something a little more everyday, this J.Crew cardigan is a must-grab.
Kitten Heels
Naturalizer Tansy Pumps, $60 (Originally $99); amazon.com
Steve Madden Syrie Kitten Heel Slingback Pumps, $66 (Originally $110); nordstrom.com
Franco Sarto Khloe Pointed-Toe Kitten Heel Pump, $125; nordstrom.com
France just confirmed what we were already thinking: Slingback kitten heels are the shoe of 2024. “I think that they’re so lovely,” he said about the practical-but-sexy style everyone from Katie Holmes to Julia Roberts has rocked. You can absolutely achieve this look for less with this now-$60 black pair from Naturalizer, but another great option is this celebrity-worn style from Reformation. And if you’re looking for something different but still on trend, I personally can’t stop thinking about this strappy, mesh pair from Jeffery Campbell.
White
Big Dart Oversized Button Down, $27 (Originally $33); amazon.com
Luvamia Mini Denim Skirt, $33 (Originally $38); amazon.com
Coach Outlet Laurel Shoulder Bag, $199 (Originally $428); coachoutlet.com
As far as colors go, there’s only one France can’t stop thinking about: White. He did say this season was about classics, afterall. France explained that not only did we see white “on every major runway,” but that it works with every style, suggesting it could be a white cotton summer dress, skirt, modern oversized button up, or even a bag. It’s a color that’s timeless, chic, and versatile enough to work with your existing wardrobe.
Colorful Bags
Mali + Lili Ray Convertible Woven Vegan Leather Tote, $74; nordstrom.com
Kate Spade Ellie Large Tote Bag, $159 (Originally $449); katespadeoutlet.com
Tory Burch Mini Kira Top-Handle Bag, $279 (Originally $398); toryburch.com
Though white might be the color of the season, colorful accessories are “the easiest way” to transition your wardrobe from spring to summer. Rather than overhauling your entire closet at the first sign of sun, France suggests swapping out dark, wintery bags for something a little more vibrant. “Add that bright green bag to your camel suit [and] add that orange bag to your black dress,” he said; the simple addition of a colorful purse allows you to get more longevity out of those early season buys. If you love a bold pop of color, this chartreuse bag from Tory Burch is a great option. But if you prefer something a bit softer, this butter yellow tote from Cuyana, a celebrity and editor-loved brand, is so subtle, it’s as close as you can get to a neutral without being one.
