About a year ago I inherited a cordless Dyson stick vacuum from a neighbor. I didn’t need it. I already own an excellent canister vacuum cleaner that bristles with attachments and operates in eight different modes. I’ll give it a try, I thought, and propped it in a corner of my kitchen. Pretty soon, I was reaching for it all the time. A blizzard of crumbs after cutting up a baguette? Popcorn everywhere after a movie? Muddy shaggy dog meets clean shaggy carpet? I grabbed the Dyson.

I have never been an enthusiastic vacuumer. Wrestling with a hose and cord feels like a weekend chore until it’s the weekend and then it doesn’t. Now I find myself making routine passes with the Dyson while my canister vacuum sits unused in the basement. My floors have never looked cleaner.

I’m hardly the first person to discover the cordless vacuum’s appeal. Sales of them are now a $7.7 billion global industry. And while there are tons of highly rated makes and models to choose from, I like the way the Dyson looks and operates. The V15 Detect Absolute has a headlight so you can find even hard-to-see dusty spots. Its “detangling vanes” remove hair (see shaggy dog, above) from the motorized roller bar. Switching it to “boost mode,” which feels like flooring a car with a turbocharger, gets at even the most deeply ingrained dirt. A HEPA filter ensures allergens aren’t just blown from the floor into the air. Emptying it is intuitive and weirdly satisfying.

The V15 Detect Absolute is one of Dyson’s more expensive cordless offerings, but it comes with various handy attachments for cleaning furniture and tight spots, and most important, an easy to install docking station that I think are worth worth the. Hang it somewhere easy to access, maybe a corner in the kitchen, and I bet you’ll use it.
