New River Gorge National Park and Preserve to hold birding event at Sandstone Falls

SUMMERS COUNTY, WV (WVNS) — Flowers and stunning views are not the only things that can be enjoyed as spring blooms throughout the Mountain State.

The New River National Park and Preserve will be holding a beginner birding event at Sandstone Falls on April 28, 2024.

Soaring through the birds of West Virginia

From 9:00 a.m. to around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2024, the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve will hold a beginner birder program at Sandstone Falls.

Visitors will meet at the parking lot near where the boardwalk starts before leaving to look for birds. While the event is focused on beginners, all birders are invited regardless of their experience level.

Birding is the hobby of watching birds in their natural habitat. Birders can go birding anywhere and anytime, and can use binoculars and a bird guide to find and identify birds. According to the National Park Service, bird guides can be organized by color, shape, and taxonomically/bird families depending on the experience level of the birder.

How biodiverse is West Virginia?

Birders can learn the types of birds that tend to be in their area regularly, see where the birds like to stay, and the learn about the time of day and time of year that certain types of birds tend to be around more often.

Wearing more neutral instead of bright colors as well as being quiet and patient will make it more likely for a birder to spot different types of birds. Birders can also keep a list of the types of birds they see as they identify them.

More details about birding can be found on the National Park Service website.
