Portland-area shops to support during Independent Bookstore Day

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The last Saturday of April is right around the corner, and so is National Independent Bookstore Day.

And news flash: even though Powell’s is the world’s largest independent bookstore, it isn’t the only one in the Portland area.

Here are seven other businesses you can visit to snag your next read.

Annie Bloom’s Books

Location: 7834 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR 97219

From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Annie Bloom’s Books is providing free advanced reader copies to customers who buy at least one book. The store will also host a scavenger hunt and offer exclusive items including a “The Future Is Indie” mug and a signed anniversary edition of “The Field Guide to Dumb Birds of North America.”

Broadway Books

Location: 1714 NE Broadway, Portland, OR 97232

Poetry is the focus of Broadway Books’ 2024 Independent Bookstore Day celebration. Customers will score 20% off all poetry books and store-themed merchandise from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They can expect open mic poetry performances, a prize wheel and limited releases as well.

Daedalus Books

Location: 2074 NW Flanders St, Portland, OR 97209

Daedalus Books has been keeping bookshelves stocked since 1997. For last year’s indie bookstore event, the Pearl District shop offered a 20% discount on used books.

Mother Foucault’s Bookshop

Location: 523 SE Morrison St, Portland, OR 97214

Head to the Rose City’s Central Eastside District to visit Mother Foucault’s Bookshop, a store that specializes in rare and vintage books. This Saturday at 7 p.m., the store will host an event titled The Uncanny: “A night featuring four performers whose ouvres often explore the odd, the dreamlike, the dystopic and the overlooked.”

Third Eye Books

Location: 2518 SE 33rd Ave, Portland, OR 97202

Although this could change soon, Third Eye Books is Portland’s only Black-owned, brick-and-mortar bookstore. The business specializes in “African-centered books,” but offers a variety of genres. It also sells accessories and small gifts.

The Romance Era Bookshop

Location: 1701 Lincoln Ave Second Floor, Vancouver, WA 98660

The Romance Era Bookshop is the spot for romance-genre lovers. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, the store will have a buy one, get one 50% off sale on all books. The warehouse will also host romance writers who will sign their books for customers.

Wallace Books

Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood store Wallace Books is offering a rare discount in honor of the holiday. The bookshop’s used graphic novels will be 20% from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
