Is the pickleball craze calling you? How to find courts and play in Palm Beach County

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing leisure sports in the country. And nowhere is that more evident than Palm Beach County. The county is home to nearly four dozen public facilities, many of them new. The sport, popular among the middle-aged and active seniors, has led to packed courts from Jupiter to Wellington to Boca Raton. Thousands of players belong to text chains that tell them where they may be open court. Yet, there is no central repository of information on local courts, times of operation, fees, tips, etc.

The Palm Beach Post is stepping into this information void with a service journalism project for our community: A one-stop shop for pickleball players throughout the county that we will continue to update with new information.

Tennis courts tumble to pickleball rise in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter

Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter are upping their pickleball game in 2024. Between the two cities, they are nearly doubling the number of public courts to 59.

But as of Jan. 12, the city remodeled at Lilac, creating 24 pickleball courts not far from the originals. (The originals will be demolished to make way for other sports.) Read more

Palm Beach County now offers weekend pickleball at three air-conditioned gyms

Too hot and rainy for pickleball? The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department may have an answer: indoor play at one of three air-conditioned gyms.

It may not be for purists as the net is portable and lines intersect with one another, and the multi-purpose gyms host a number of sports that include volleyball and basketball. But the advantage of escaping the heat and not worrying about rain more than makes up for not playing at a facility designed for just pickleball, according to Dennis Whiteman and Robin Hewitt of Lantana.
