Nicolas Cage is the king of crazy.

Look at his rap sheet, filmography speaking – 1995’s Leaving Las Vegas (a writer goes on an alcoholic suicide spree in Sin City), 2002’s Adaptation (Cage plays not one-but-two neurotic, sexually-frustrated, self-loathing screenwriters with a terrible twist), or more recently 2021’s Pig (a reclusive chef goes on a murderous rampage for his truffle pig).

Cage is a character, an enigma. But, despite over 100 films on IMDB, he’s never delved into the world of surfing. Not until now with the unimaginatively named The Surfer.

After it was announced, there were call-outs to cast local surfers in the movie in the Margaret River area, and if reports from local news showing Cage and his family showing up in Perth are any indication, then, it looks like filming is getting underway.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cage is set to star in an upcoming film entitled The Surfer, in which the longtime actor takes on a group of territorial locals.

Here’s the synopsis:

“In The Surfer, when a man (Cage) returns to his beachside hometown in Australia, many years since building a life for himself in the U.S., he is humiliated in front of his teenage son by a local gang of surfers who claim strict ownership over the secluded beach of his childhood. Wounded, ‘The Surfer’ decides to remain at the beach, declaring war against those in control of the bay. But as the conflict escalates, the stakes spin wildly out of control, taking ‘The Surfer’ to the edge of his sanity.”

Stay tuned for a trailer.
