Nicolas Cage to Fight “Gang of Surfers” in New Film
Nicolas Cage is known for some iconic, offbeat acting performances.
With over 100 films on his IMDB page, he’s played everything from alcoholic with a deathwish (Leaving Las Vegas), to a convict with a heart of gold (Con Air), to a car thief (Gone in 60 Seconds), to a Declaration of Independence thief (National Treasure), to himself (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent), et cetera et cetera.
He’s done it all; but as far as we can tell, he’s never played a surfer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cage is set to star in an upcoming film entitled The Surfer, in which the longtime actor takes on a group of territorial locals.
Here’s the synopsis:
“In The Surfer, when a man (Cage) returns to his beachside hometown in Australia, many years since building a life for himself in the U.S., he is humiliated in front of his teenage son by a local gang of surfers who claim strict ownership over the secluded beach of his childhood. Wounded, ‘The Surfer’ decides to remain at the beach, declaring war against those in control of the bay. But as the conflict escalates, the stakes spin wildly out of control, taking ‘The Surfer’ to the edge of his sanity.”
Oh, man. Lots to unpack. Surf gangs. A territorial war over a surf spot. Nic Cage being pushed to the brink of his sanity. That last part sounds like a perfect role for Cage.
However, Hollywood has historically missed the mark when it comes to accurate portrayals of surfing on the silverscreen. But this…this could be interesting.
Principal photography for The Surfer is set begin in Australia in September, 2023.
