Mom Tries to Teach Bernese Mountain Dog to Speak and Her Reaction Is Adorable

Teaching your dog basic commands helps them understand your expectations and is a great way to communicate with them. One of the toughest ones out there for many dog moms and dads is to teach them to speak on command...especially because so often we are telling them not to bark!

Olive is a gorgeous Bernese Mountain Dog whose mom was trying to get her to bark in this video she shared in mid-April. Mom is quietly asking Olive to bark, and the pup seems to be confused by what mom wants. Watch and make sure your sound is on because you can tell that Olive's trying to decide if she should or shouldn't do it!

Olive is so cute! Mom was asking her to bark so quietly that it seems that Olive decided to whisper bark...or as @Rebecca Ouellette pointed out, "lowercase bark"! While Olive's mom was trying to get her to bark, this breed isn't known to be excessive barkers, though they will bark to get attention. @capndangerbeard got more than 19 thousand likes when they said, "It's like you're giving her permission to say a naughty word." Another commenter got more than 20 thousand likes when they shared, "The most literal “ruff” I’ve ever heard". @Kat Osollo pointed out, "I swear Bernese Mountain dogs are just painted Golden Retrievers!" and while I never realized it before, she's so spot on!

Do Bernese Mountain Dogs Make Good Pets?

I think that Bernese Mountain Dogs (lovingly nicknamed Berners) are absolutely adorable and would love to have one for myself. While they are very large dogs, they're one of the most docile dogs around. One Pet Helpful article says, "This dog breed almost never bites the owner or a stranger. According to one study, they have a bite frequency index of 0 (compared to a breed that more commonly bites, like the Dachshund)."

But don't let them fool you...while they aren't known to bite, they still make good guard dogs because they have a loud, deep, threatening bark, a serious face, and foreboding appearance. They're big! Adult males can grow up to 120 pounds, and if a stranger or burglar saw him, they'd probably run the other way!

Berners were bred to be working dogs and so they require a good amount of exercise each day. If they don't get it, they can be very destructive, a common boredom buster. If you're an active family this may not be a problem, but if you're not willing to exercise your pup daily, a Berner isn't the dog for you.

Another thing to consider when it comes to Berners is that they have thick, long coats that needs to be brushed regularly or they'll get very matted. They shed a lot, and they drool even more...especially after eating and drinking. Check out this tip to help your dog avoid getting water all over your floors after drinking...something I'm trying to teach our puppy to do now even though she's not a Berner, she's just sloppy!

As with all dog breeds, there are good and bad that go with them. Make sure to do your research to determine if this breed would be a good fit for your family.
