Meryl Streep and Martin Short were adorable as cute couple Loretta Durkin and Oliver Putnam in Only Murders In the Building Season 3. After the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 7, whispers spread that the pair may have taken their onscreen romance into real life.

"Are Meryl Streep and Martin Short dating… because if that’s true… that’s like Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner multiplied by Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft," writer and podcaster Louis Virtel tweeted during the show.

Following the fervor of his musing, a resurfaced post from another writer from December added to the rumblings.

Time Out New York theater editor Adam Feldman tweeted in December 2023, "There are two quite surprising celebrity couples I’ve been hearing about for weeks and I can’t believe the news hasn’t broken about either of them yet."

"I heard a rumor that Meryl Streep and Martin Short are dating," a quote tweet response from author Adam Roberts read.

Are Meryl Streep and Martin Short dating?

Some reports speculated that the October 2023 reports of Streep splitting from her longtime husband Don Gummer six years earlier were to preempt rumors of her new romance with Short from coming out. However, neither Short nor Streep have commented on whether they're an item.

"Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than six years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart," a representative for Streep told PEOPLE at the time.

However, a rep for Short told The Messenger of his relationship with Streep, "They are just very good friends, nothing more."

Has Meryl Streep worked with Martin Short?

Streep and Short most recently played a couple in Only Murders In the Building Season 3. It's the first time they've shared a screen credit.

Showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap that Streep personally thanked him for writing Oliver and Loretta's love story into the season.

"It's pretty unexpected to imagine a pairing of Meryl Streep with Martin Short and watch them find this incredible connection together and, as Meryl said, to not have it be twee or about the age or about any of that," he said. "It's just a beautiful romance that you buy, I think because of who these two characters are. But then you see Marty step up in ways that are incredible and nobody works harder at it, comes in with more intelligence to the work and then to watch him have these scenes that break your heart and have to be played with such dramatic poignancy, riding the line of keeping it comedic, keeping it mysterious… I'm amazed."

Does Martin Short have a daughter?

Short has one adult daughter and two adult sons with his late wife Nancy Dolman. Their names are Katherine, Henry and Oliver.

When did Martin Short meet his wife?

Short met actress Dolman in 1972 when they co-starred in the musical Godspell. They married in 1980, at which point Dolman stepped away from her career to raise their children.

Dolman died from ovarian cancer in 2010.
