What was the elimination challenge this episode, and who won it?

The Red Team, which was captained by Lydia, was also made up of Alfred, Bryson, Kristell and Jordyn.

The Blue Team was captained by Miles, who oversaw Asher, Lilo, Michael and Remy.

Each team was challenged with whipping up a meal that satisfies the players’ big appetites while meeting their dietary restrictions. The fly in the ointment was that one of the Globetrotters is vegan, so the teams needed to make eight entrees of their regular menu and then one vegan dish.

The menus are as follows:

Red Team

New York Steak with mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy
Asparagus
Coleslaw

Vegan dish: Cauliflower steak with tomato sauce, Asparagus

Blue Team

Buttermilk fried chicken with honey hot sauce
Potato salad
Green Beans
Corn Bread

Vegan dish: Grilled eggplant and zucchini, tomato stack and basil pesto

It was a close vote, especially since the Red Team made the preferred vegan dish, but the Blue Team won the overall competition, meaning that someone from the Red Team had to leave. But in a surprise twist, Gordon Ramsay shared that he and fellow judges Tilly Ramsay, Daphne Oz and Aarón Sánchez were eliminating two home cooks: Lydia and Kristell.

Gordon said, “Lydia, tonight you had a huge responsibility on your shoulders. You were the team captain. Unfortunately, you didn’t step up and lead your team. Kristell, you need to be a team player. Shine as an individual but help your team. Tonight, we didn’t see that.”

Kristell said, “I feel bad, but this experience has been amazing. I’m in the MasterChef kitchen learning how to manage my time and how to plate and I got to meet these amazing chefs. I’m really happy because I’m leaving with a lot of knowledge and a lot of friends.”

Lydia said, “Even though I got eliminated, I am extremely proud of myself because that was the first time I was team captain. I gained more confidence and now I can handle anything.”

MasterChef Junior Season 9 airs on Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
