Kristen Bell Stopped Breastfeeding for Her Latest Movie Role

Working moms already know that life is all about balance and sacrifice. Kristen Bell took that philosophy to the next level in CHIPS, in which she plays wife to her IRL husband, Dax Shepard, when she stopped breastfeeding for the role. Bell went on Late Night With Seth Meyers to chat about the movie and reveal just how being a mom helped get her into character.

“It was a physical sacrifice, and I feel like I’ve joined the ranks of, like, when Christian Bale loses 200 pounds for a role,” she told Meyers. “I was like, ‘My craft deserves it. I gotta do it. I’m a serious actor.’ I was breastfeeding at the time, and I wanted my character to have an aggressive boob job. Aggressive, like it’s the only thing you can think about when you see someone, so I didn’t pump for a full day.” Presto: instant boob job.

“I said to the kids, ‘Daddy’s making a movie, go to the fridge, the food truck is closed,’” she joked.

Bell also joked about her character’s “sexualization,” as, to be fair, she’s showing off some serious cleavage in the movie. “No one sexualizes me but me,” she told Seth. “I suggested it, and the one disagreement we had on the set of CHIPS was when I came out in that red bathing suit.”

Bell isn’t the only celebrity mother who’s had to consider breastfeeding at work. Victoria’s Secret star Candice Swanepoel has had to defend breastfeeding against sexualization — just because someone makes a living baring skin doesn’t make breastfeeding a sexual act. Last year, Kim Kardashian‘s makeup artist posted a double breastfeeding photo with her newborn twins. And our perpetual fave Chrissy Teigen even breastfed baby Luna on a photo shoot. Let’s just call them the celebrity spirit goddesses of breastfeeding.

As for Bell, she may have had a difficult pump-free day, but at least she’ll always have that red bathing suit to remember it by.
