Earlier this week, Nintendo held a Partner Showcase presentation, showing off a host of games coming to Nintendo Switch in the future. The English presentation had a bunch of great games, including a brand-new Gundam Breaker game, an Epic Mickey remake, and a new Endless Ocean game. The Japanese Direct also had a few bangers, though, including a new game from the writer of Kingdom Hearts.

During the Japanese Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase earlier this week, developer and publisher FuRyu announced a brand-new action-RPG called Reynatis. The game’s being headed up by Trinity Trigger director Takumi Isobe, with a story written by Kazushige Nojima, who’s a pretty big get all things considered.

Nojima is best known for his work on the Kingdom Hearts series, but there’s really very little in Square Enix’s catalog from the last decade that he hasn’t touched. He was a scenario writer – that’s what Japan calls a screenwriter – for Final Fantasy 8 and 10, as well as the sequels for the latter, and penned the story for Final Fantasy 15, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, and more.

The trailer for Reynatis in the Japanese Direct was a little on the short side, but showed some very bold character design, gorgeous visuals, and very fast-paced combat. There were a few moments with lots of numbers flashing up on the screen that made it seem just a bit busy, but the vibes were great.

Part of the reason the vibes were so good is because of another Kingdom Hearts fellow, composer Yoko Shimomura. Shimomura is one of the best composers in the games industry today, having worked on games like Street Fighter, Kingdom Hearts, Live A Live, Final Fantasy 15, and the Mario RPGs.

Reynatis will be released on July 25, 2024 on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch in Japan. No Western release has been announced — but more information is due on the weekend, so we’ll have to see how it goes.
