The Gundam franchise has been on a roll lately, with new Gundam movies – both traditional and CGI – making waves and stellar sales for its gunpla model kits in recent months. The only thing missing was a new Gundam video game, but the latest Nintendo Direct has rectified that with something fans will be very excited for.

During the Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, Bandai Namco and Nintendo announced a brand-new Gundam game, Gundam Breaker 4. Gundam Breaker 4 brings over 250 base gunpla kits to play with, all of which can be heavily customized and brought into combat missions. Fans of previous games will be pleased to know that kitbashing together hybrid units is very much on the table here, and with so many mechs to choose from, there are thousands of combinations possible.

Here’s how Nintendo describes the game:

“Create your ultimate Gundam and deploy it across a variety of combat missions. Defeat your enemies, acquire their parts and equip new abilities. Then mix and match parts from over 250 base kits to personalize your own Gunpla with the biggest variety of mobile suits and parts of any Gundam Breaker game to date. Plus, you can collect, pose and display your creations in Diorama Mode. Express your style and get ready to sortie! Break, build and battle when GUNDAM BREAKER 4 launches on Nintendo Switch this year.”

Eagle-eyed fans have already noticed Gundam mechs from The Witch From Mercury, suggesting it’s going to be pretty up to date when it comes to Gundam media — which certainly makes sense, given how big The Witch from Mercury was. There’s also a host of classics, of course, including iconic mechs from Gundam G and many more. It’s safe to say that no matter what era of Gundam you’re a fan of, there’s going to be something for you in Gundam Breaker 4.

The Gundam Breaker series started in 2013 for the PS3, before being ported to Vita and followed up with two sequels. It all came crashing down with the release of New Gundam Breaker for the PS4 in 2018, which was very poorly received from fans and critics alike. It was released in a broken, buggy state, and despite multiple updates following its release, never really lived up to its predecessors.

Still, so far Gundam Breaker 4 seems to be ticking all the right boxes, and fans are getting very excited by it. Gundam Breaker 4 will be released in 2024 for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC via Steam.
