This Kid’s Green and Blue Bedroom Is on A Houseboat — And There’s Storage Galore
If you simply glance at a photo of Annelies Dorsman’s son, Scott’s, bedroom, you’ll likely think it’s just like every other kid’s room. The space is colorful, Scandinavian-inspired, and has all the storage solutions to house this kid’s toys and clothing — especially his beloved soccer balls.
What you might not automatically assume is that Scott’s bedroom is actually floating on water. (Yes, you read that correctly.) Annelies and her family live on a houseboat in Northern Amsterdam and have done so since before her two kids were born.
Scott’s room is so special because even though it’s on a houseboat and is under 150 square feet, it feels like a space you’d find in a home on land. That’s likely because of Annelies’ clever storage solutions, such as purchasing HAY folding crates (which you can also see in this kid’s room tour!) and a Vtwonen bed with drawers.
Before Annelies had kids, the rooms were used for guests so she originally painted the walls in bright colors. However, when it became Scott’s room, Annelies changed the space several times, including hanging tiger-themed and mint green wallpaper and even painting it dark blue. However, she finally landed on a palette for the space that happens to be Scott’s favorite color.
“Because green started to play a big role in our interior I chose to use this color as well upstairs,” Annelies writes. “Scott’s bed is dark green [MissPompadour’s Groen met Grijs], and his walls are now painted in a very light tint of mint green [MissPompadour’s Groen met Salie].”
Scott plays an important role in the design process, always giving his seal of approval before Annelies finalizes any decisions. This collaborative approach ensures they’re always “on the same page,” as Annelies puts it. Scott was on board when Annelies proposed a more Scandinavian-inspired flow in the space by adding Little Greene’s Pearl Colour Pale paint to offset the green and natural materials.
“For me, it’s the color palette and the bed with storage,” Annelies shares when asked about her favorite part of the room. “Scott also loves his bed and the sloping roof above it. It feels like a little house.”
