Kelly Slater and Barton Lynch have long been staples of the surfing world. Slater, of course, is the GOAT. Eleven-time world champ, cultural icon, actor, musician, entrepreneur, etcetera. Lynch, an Australian legend with a reputation as not only one of the best competitors ever but also as an outspoken surfing spokesman .

They first met many moons ago, but they really became friends on a trip to Fiji. “It was in ’92 when we went to Fiji,” Slater recalled. “That was the first time we really got to hang out.”

It was just one year before a young Slater would win his first world title — the first of five consecutive — and five years after Barton was crowned. They’ve both seen a lot over the course of their years; both taken very different career paths, but both have been dedicated to surfing and surfing culture for most of their lives.

In the two-hour conversation above on Barton’s podcast, The Stoked Bloke, they covered a lot of ground, from Kelly’s upbringing to some of the possible reasons for his unparalleled success.

There’s something a little different in listening to a podcast between two old friends than there is about one involving two people who don’t know each other. Kelly’s candor with people he shares history with is obvious, and never more so than in this sit down.
