Journey to homeownership: Marquette County Habitat for Humanity breaks ground on two homes

ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJMN) – After just finishing and dedicating their 110th home earlier this week, Marquette County Habitat for Humanity broke ground on two new homes Friday afternoon.

This is their 112th and 113th homes located back-to-back in Ishpeming Township. From applying to becoming a partner family, to breaking ground and start building, Deanna Johnson, Marquette County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director says moments like this are the best feeling.

“To be with somebody from this point all the way through to the home dedication, which we saw earlier this week, it’s it’s just amazing,” said Johnson. “A lot of them didn’t know that they could have a home, buy a home. It’s a process that’s very difficult. It’s not easy to get through this process. They give up really their whole summer at a minimum, to help build this house. But it’s such a rewarding experience for them and for us.”

Theresa Lancour will own the home on Marble Street and Sheila Brand will own the home on Silver Street. The two just met on Friday and are excited to get started on this next phase in the journey to becoming homeowners.

“I am over the moon,” said Lancour. “I am so excited. I have to keep it down a notch because every time I talk about it, I start doing the happy dance. This is the best day today to get this going. We can start doing family events together. I’m in a small, small apartment right now, and it’s been kind of hard to do family events. I used to be the host. So this is going to be great to start all over again.”

“I am really looking forward to working with this wonderful group of people,” said Brand. “Helping them, them helping me and just getting a lot of work done and seeing what happens. I think the thing that I’m really excited about is starting over decorating and having privacy and making a nice space for my children and myself and my dogs.”

With these two homes build, Marquette County Habitat for Humanity says they are planning on having a lot of volunteer help throughout the summer and always appreciate more volunteers to get on board.
