President Joe Biden and his wife first lady Dr. Jill Biden hosted a state dinner on April 10. The couple welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife Yuko Kishida to the White House.

For the formal occasion, the first lady fashioned an Oscar de la Renta gown from the fall 2024 collection. The dress was adorned with sapphire ombré art nouveau crystal embroidery, which made Biden sparkle. The Oscar de la Renta gown also featured a slit in the back.

Dr. Biden opted for minimal jewelry, save for a pair of simple dangling earrings. She wore her blond hair in a low bun and completed the ensemble with a pair of pointed-toe glitter heels.

Co-creative directors for Oscar de la Renta, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, looked to stain glass designs for the inspiration behind the fall 2024 collection. Dr. Biden’s ombre dress featured hues of purple on the bodice, which artfully complemented the ornate gown worn by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s wife Yuko Kishida.

This isn’t the first time the first lady has worn a design courtesy of Oscar de la Renta. During her appearance while presenting the “Social Change” award at the 2023 Grammy Awards, Dr. Biden fashioned a floor-grazing gown embellished with leaves and flowers, featuring an off-the-shoulder and long-sleeved silhouette — an element among one of her signature looks.

The first lady also wore an Oscar de la Renta gown with a similar silhouette and floral pattern when she and President Biden hosted French president Emmanuel Macron and first lady Brigitte Macron at the White House in December 2022.
