New Jersey Animal Shelter's Video Explaining Why Dogs Were Surrendered Is a Tearjerker

Owning an animal requires responsibility and dedication. Not to mention the costs associated with being an owner. According to Rover, the average dog parent will spend between $610 and $3,555 per year on their dog. This is about a 15% increase since 2022.

Whether it's from the rising costs of pet ownership or from lifestyle changes, animal shelters, unfortunately, hear it all in terms of why a pet is getting surrendered. An animal shelter, known on TikTok as @voorheesanimalorphanage, shared a few reasons why dogs were surrendered and it's heartbreaking.

Ugh, doesn't this just punch you right in the gut? Our hearts are aching from each one of these stories. The worst part is that it's not just happening at this New Jersey animal shelter. Dogs around the country are being surrendered daily to local shelters. This is leading to a shelter overcrowding crisis fueled in part by the COVID pandemic.

Believe it or not, social media has been a blessing in getting the word out about animals that need foster families or forever homes. Other ways animal shelters share about their available animals are through community social events. Shelter employees or volunteers will bring animals to meet-n-greets or "yappy hours" so the dogs can get socialization and so potential adopters can meet these cuties. We highly recommend these events so you can get a feel for these animals outside the confines of the shelter.

If you'd like to adopt one of these precious babies, visit the Voorhees Animal Orphanage website for more information. And if you're not local to New Jersey, reach out to a shelter in your area. There are plenty of animals that need loving and forever homes across the country. And trust us, there's no better reward than adopting an animal.
