Missouri Roller Hockey Team Supports Local Shelter Pets With 'Pucks for Paws' Event

No matter which of the 50 states you live in, countless shelter animals near you need a forever home. And even if you're not in the market to adopt, there's no shortage of ways you can help these shelter pets feel as comfortable and confident as possible. Just look at what this Missouri roller hockey group is doing!

It all began with hockey player and event organizer Rob Kearns, whose two passions are dogs and hockey. That's why he came up with the annual 'Pucks 4 Paws' Roller Hockey Tournament, where--over the last 5 years--$20,00 has been raised for Southeast Missouri Pets animal shelter.

What a fantastic idea! The Pucks 4 Paws event gave roller hockey players a chance to indulge in their favorite pastime, while observers could support shelter animals through T-shirt, food, and beverage purchases. Southeast Missouri Pets also held mobile adoptions, a silent auction, and sold shelter discount cards.

When Southeast Missouri Pets executive director, Jenn Farmer spoke with KFVS 12, she made sure to tell Buster's story. He's a sweet rescue dog who lives happily with a foster mom, but his past wasn't nearly so nice.

"He came to us about a year and a half ago, because he had a bullet, gunshot wound through his face right here, and it was wide open,” she explained. “It was, you know, horrifying to think somebody could do that.” We can't even imagine how gruesome that would be to witness, let alone experience. But it was all thanks to community donations that Buster--and other shelter animals--fully recovered.

With events like Pucks 4 Paws, Southeast Missouri Pets gets more chances to raise money for animals just like Buster. We can't wait to see what next year brings!
