Animal Shelters Are Offering Special Perks to Prevent Shelter Overcrowding

Reduced adoption fees and gift cards are just some of the perks.

Every year, approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter animal shelters. Sadly, many shelters become overcrowded, and as a result, they now offer adoption perks to encourage people to adopt unwanted dogs and cats. By adopting a pet, not only are you providing a loving forever home to a homeless animal, but you are also being rewarded for your kindness and compassion.

ABC7 reports that in Broward County, Florida's second-most populous county, anyone who adopts an older dog is offered free dog food for life.

The San Diego Humane Society is offering $100 gift cards to people willing to foster large dogs.

The new incentive was created with the goal of finding foster homes for 50 dogs. This decision was made after the organization reported having over 600 dogs in their care last month, which set a new record.

To help alleviate the burden on animal shelters, many organizations offer reduced adoption fees or even free adoption days. These incentives encourage individuals who may be hesitant due to cost to consider adopting a pet and providing a loving home. With limited space, resources, and funding, shelters greatly benefit from these programs, as they help to ensure unwanted pets find the homes they deserve.

The Humane Society states on its website that many organizations offer free behavior support. Some may negotiate with a future landlord with you, provide free pet food if you’re facing financial challenges or offer veterinary care for your pet through a clinic.

Adopting a pet is always a wonderful thing to do, both for you and your forever friend, and you can contact your local shelter, rescue or Humane Society to see what perks they offer to potential adopters.
