From a sultry smoky eye to a striking red lip, the holiday soirée makeup options seem endless, but when it comes to hair, it’s a different story. Sadly, there isn’t really a one-size fits all style to get you through the holiday party season. Not everyone can make Veronica Lake waves look glamorous or throw their hair into a sleek ponytail. We’ve rounded up four looks that work for four different hair lengths, all courtesy of our favorite stars who stepped out in New York City on Tuesday for the Museum of Modern Art’s 8th Annual Film Benefit. Whether you’ve got a pixie cut or a trendy lob, you’ll be able to make one of these looks work for you.

Cate Blanchett’s Sleek Bob

Not sure what to do with your chin length bob this holiday? Stylist Robert Vetica updated Blanchett’s bob by slicking back the hair one side and keeping the other side straight and sleek. The modern (and slightly tough) look was the perfect complement to Blanchett’s Chanel couture gown.

Diane Kruger’s Half-Up Top Knot

Diane Kruger is known for her effortless red carpet style and her hair is no exception. DJ Quintero created this half-up top knot for the star, giving her subtle, beachy waves before putting hair into a loose knot. The key to this look is to put down your brush and use your hands to pull hair back— you want it to look undone and not too perfect.

Rooney Mara’s Cool Twist

Master stylist Adir Abergel was behind Mara’s gold accented twist at the benefit. He created a “folded braid” and secured the ends with a piece of gold twine (talk about chic!) before pinning it in place on top of her head. The look is reminiscent of the knots created by Guido Palau for the fall 2015 Marc Jacobs runway. If you’ve got medium to long length hair, this look is perfect for you.

Halsey’s Retro Pixie

If you’re looking to add some interest to your pixie cut, consider Gatsby-style waves a la singer Halsey. Apply a strong hold styling gel to wet hair and part hair off to one side. Using your fingers and a fine-toothed comb, form the waves while hair is still wet. Finish the look with a strong hold spray to keep everything in place.
