Fall Beauty Trend: Dress Up Your Sleek Ponytail

While natural textures and undone ‘dos tend to dominate the runways, the sleek ponytails from the fall shows landed high on our favorite looks list. “A sleek ponytail really celebrates your features and looks beautiful from every angle,” says hairstylist Deycke Heidorn, who created the look above on Frankie Wall. The key to this style is having sleek strands, so if you’ve got naturally curly or wavy hair, protect dry hair with a heat protective spray like Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray ($4), and use a flat iron to create a smooth texture.

Next, Heidorn says to part your hair to one side and brush all the hair back, repeating until you have a smooth surface, securing in a ponytail with a fabric covered hair tie. To keep hair extra shiny, she recommends adding a styling cream that will provide shine without making the hair heavy or oily. She likes Shu Uemera Tasai Cream ($38) for it’s light, milky texture.

Heidorn’s trick for taming flyaways doesn’t involve any hairspray. Instead, apply a styling oil or cream to a thick makeup powder brush and brush down any flyaways. Using a treatment like this is healthier than a hairspray (which can be drying due to alcohol) and will make it so your hair remains brushable afterwards. For even more shine, Heidorn recommends applying hair oil (try Shu Uemura Essence Absolute Nourishing Protective Oil, $69) starting at your part but avoiding the ponytail.

Consider finishing off your ponytail with a cool hair accessory. Forget the butterfly clips and sparkly barrettes of your childhood — we’re talking slick leather accents like we saw at Carolina Herrera and Derek Lam. Stylist Orlando Pita wrapped ponytails at Herrera with metallic leather cords and at Derek Lam, he added ‘70s-feeling leather strips each secured with a single wood pin.

The leather wrap ($68) above is from our favorite hair accessory designer, Jennifer Behr — you’ve seen her headbands on everyone from Taylor Swift to Beyoncé. Behr also makes leather head wraps, jeweled barrettes (think fall Prada), and pretty gold Grecian headbands, for all of your fall hair accessory needs.
