Hawaii Surf Photog Shares Gallery of His Best 'Wild Wipeouts'

Surfers are suckers for extremes.

On one end of the spectrum, there's the best waves, barrels, and wins. Then there's the other end with extreme kook moves, surfing bloopers, and our favorite—wipeouts.

This winter's been loaded with 'em. We saw Shane Dorian wipeout at Pipe, Billy Kemper eat sh*t at Cloudbreak, and Kai Lenny drop knowledge about wipeout survival. Meanwhile, Pipeline hospitalized, concussed, and knocked out and handful of surfers who endured deadly wipeouts.

Hawaii-based surf photographer Brian Bielmann is the latest to join the wipeout wagon with his post above sharing his "best-of" wipeout gallery. As the name implies, it features the "wild wipeouts" he's captured over the years.

Captioning the post, Bielmann wrote:

"Everybody loves a crazy wipeout. The thrill of victory or the agony of defeat ….Even The Surfers love seeing their wipeouts once it’s all over and they’re safe. It’s a scary feeling when things have gone wrong and you’re praying for them to be OK.

"Waiting for them to come up. Sometimes they come up and they’re unconscious then you’ve got a watch the rescue happen and that’s the really scary part. That is what makes big wave surfing so terrifying. You say a lot of prayers for the Surfer, while you’re waiting.

"Here are some wipeouts over the years I have so many wipeout photos it’s ridiculous, I have a whole selection in my archives titled Wild Wipeouts. #pipeline #wipeouts #waimea #big wave surfing #extremesurfing #extreme sports"

One of Bielmann's followers inquired about a shot of big wave surfer Jamie Mitchell and asked:

"Did @jamie_mitcho make it though or get pitched? Looks like a pitch to me, but hope he made it through. Soooo heavy"

Mitchell responded: "made it 😮"
