While there’s something to be said for the antique charm of a metal bed frame or the classic appeal of a wood alternative, if you’re looking to add a soft touch to your space, an upholstered bed frame is the way to go. Offered in a range of plush to textured fabrics, these cozy silhouettes essentially function like one giant cushion for your bed. And because they come in a vast array of colors and patterns, it’s easy to find an option to fit your room’s aesthetic.
“It’s important to remember that your bed is the main feature, like a sofa in a living room, and it’s going to dictate how the room looks and feels,” explains interior designer Emily Henderson. Looking to transform your space into a zen oasis? Opt for earthy colors and natural textures, like linen or cotton. Or, eager to pack a punch in a tinier space? Go all out with a patterned option and pair it with striped or floral luxe sheets.
Upholstered bed frames are also surprisingly versatile, no matter what style you choose. “Remember that you can always drape something fun over your headboard, much like how you can throw a pretty blanket over the back of a sofa,” says Henderson. “Whether it’s a beautiful tapestry, quilt, or even colorful tablecloth, all are great options to give your headboard a whole new look without having to replace it.”

What to consider before buying an upholstered bed frame
Materials. A style made with performance fabric is best if you’re taking pets or kids into account. Otherwise, Henderson recommends options done in heavy linens and velvets. “Linen is such a soft, pretty look that feels soothing in a bedroom,” she explains. “Velvet is easy to clean and undoubtedly luxurious, which is also pretty nice when your bed is the star in your bedroom.”
Storage. If you’re low on closet space, pick an upholstered bed with built-in storage drawers or that can accommodate storage bins underneath.
How to care for an upholstered bed
If you prefer something extremely low maintenance, Henderson recommends steering clear of light colors. “Our heads are full of oils that can transfer onto your headboard if you aren’t extremely careful,” she warns. “That happened to one of our beds, and while it’s not the end of the world, it is a pretty big bummer.” Instead, opt for textured fabrics—like corduroy or bouclé—in dark hues that can hide stains better.
