Snakes play an important role in so many ecosystems by helping to control the rodent and insect populations. Snakes are also prey to other animals like hawks and bobcats providing an important role in the food chain.

Keeping a Corn Snake as a Pet

Corn snakes are a fantastic type of snake for a first time snake owner because they are both calm and non-aggressive. They are easy to handle, but if they do get frightened they can strike their owner's hand. They can also let you know if they are feeling frightened or threatened by vibrating their tail.

Corn snakes don't need super large enclosures, at least at first, but they can grow up to be 3-6 feet long so their terrarium size should be adjusted as they grow so they have adequate space to explore and sleep. Daily temperatures should be on the warm side should range from 70-85 degrees Fahrenheit while the basking area can go up to 88-90F.

Corn snakes require fresh water at all times and for those of us who are squeamish, this reptile may not be for you because they do eat small mice. Larger corn snakes can eat rats.

Corn snakes are quite calm, easy to handle, and readily available to purchase at your local pet store. The main drawback is their diet if you feel sad about feeding them live or frozen mice, and they can live up to twenty years of age so they require a serious commitment.

They certainly are beautiful animals though, and for someone wanting a pet they can pretty up and have a beautiful home for, a Palmetto Corn Snake may be the perfect pet for them!
