Free cuts offered to Quaker Oats workers

Apr. 4—CHAMPAIGN — A local cosmetology school is offering free haircuts and other services to workers displaced by the recent closure of the Quaker Oats factory in Danville.

The Royal School by IdHair is owned by Rod Sickler and located at 2522 Village Green Place in Champaign.

Instructor Michelle Erixon said that Sickler and the rest of the team is very passionate about helping the community during this difficult time.

"I very much believe that everybody has got to help each other out to make it through to our next day," she said. "...I, along with the rest of the students and my other coworker instructor would like to do anything and everything that we can possibly do to help these people move their lives on to the next level."

This includes not just haircuts, but also free barber services, nail work and cosmetology. Veterans and active members of the military who bring proof of their service can also receive free services, Erixon said.

Walk-ins are accepted, but there are a limited amount of students, so people are encouraged to call ahead so that the salon can arrange a time for them to receive service. The school's number is 217-729-1014, and Erixon can be reached at 217-714-7058.

She said they'll be offering free services for as long as the community needs them.

"Some people are going to be able to come in and get some services and land a job right off the bat," Erixon said. "And I understand not everybody is sometimes as fortunate as that. And I want to just keep the open door to help out anybody in any way that we can and pay it forward."
