Forest Officials Reunite Lost Baby Elephant With Mom in India

As a parent, there's nothing more terrifying than not knowing where your child is and it's just as terrifying for your child, too. I suspect that it's the same for animals, as well.  CBS Newspath shared a video on Tuesday, January 9th of a baby elephant in India who was somehow separated from its herd. Wildlife wardens and forest officials worked together to reunite the baby with its mama, and it's a story with a happy ending.

The baby, who was estimated to be about four or five months old, was found and the rescuers somehow knew where the baby's herd was. Watch until the end to see the baby find its mom!

What a great story to be a part of! It took many men to get the baby to the area it needed to get to, and they washed and put mud on the baby to get rid of the human scent...pretty smart! Not to mention, it looked like quite a trek they had to make to get the baby back to its herd. I wonder how the baby was lost in the first place. I was so glad that this CBS Newspath story had a happy ending, as were the many viewers that left comments about it. As you can imagine, most commenters praised the rescuers after watching the story. Others said how cute the baby was. You can't argue with that... I think it's safe to say that most of us think that baby elephants are absolutely adorable!

Fun Facts About Baby Elephants

I love stories about baby elephants, and from first steps to first baths, I could watch them learn and explore all day! If you're like me, you might always want to learn more about animals that you love, and so I did a bit of research about these little guys.

Elephants have the longest gestation period of all animals. Moms are pregnant for a very long time - they have a gestation period of 18-22 months. Imagine being pregnant for two years! When babies are born, they weigh about 250 pounds (talk about a big baby!), and interestingly enough about 99% of calves are born at night to avoid predators. Babies have curly black or red hair on their foreheads at birth that goes away as they age. They don't see very well at birth, but recognize their mom by her scent, touch, and sound. They'll drink up to three gallons of mom's milk every day for the next two years, and sometimes longer.

Elephants are so intelligent and seem so kind and chill. They're very protective of their herds and seem like a family. I love seeing how much they care for each other, and I wish this little one and its mom the best!
