Fishing derby set for May 4

Apr. 24—MIFFLINBURG — Four community organizations are planning a fishing derby for youth on May 4.

The derby will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 4 in Buffalo Creek at the Harry Haney Ballfields along Eighth Street in Mifflinburg. It is sponsored by the American Legion Post 410, Buffalo Creek Watershed Alliance, the R.B. Winter Trout Unlimited, and the Englehart Family.

"This is an event where families will have fun, kids will have fun," said BCWA Board Member Gerald Heckler. "It's about getting kids out into nature."

The event is for children up to 12 years old. It is free and open to the public with no registration needed, said Heckler.

"There are over 600 trout, some of them quite large," he said. "We went out and got donations and purchased the fish. It was close to $6,000 for the fish."

Prizes are available for tagged fish and the top three large fish caught. Prizes range from fishing gear to bicycle gear to gift cards, he said.

There will also be an auction. R.B. Winter Trout Unlimited will have an education table set up, too, he said.
