As we teeter toward the start of May, women everywhere are shedding their winter coats in favor of their favorite spring sundresses—and Elle Fanning is leading the way.

The star of The Great made a low-key appearance in New York City over the weekend, accompanied by boyfriend Gus Wenner. While she may have been strolling down the streets of Manhattan, her outfit was perhaps better suited to early summer days in coastal New England.

The centerpiece of her look was a gauzy white prairie dress, embellished with delicate pleats and floral embroidery as well as ruffles across the Peter Pan collar, short puff sleeves, and midi hemline. She finished off the look with some darker accents, from her trendy black ballet flats to brown tortoiseshell sunglasses. Layered over her shoulders was a long khaki trench coat, fit for both walks on the beach or a subway commute into the city.

While the actor is known for her glamorously larger-than-life outfits on the red carpet, her day-to-day style is a lot more subdued.

During another recent street style outing in New York City, for instance, Fanning stepped out in a crisp white button-down, a white ribbed pointelle tank top, a pair of straight-leg jeans, a woven black crossbody bag, and a red pair of cord thong sandals from Miu Miu. On a separate occasion, she embraced minimalism once again while dressed in a fuzzy peach cardigan, a slouchy white T-shirt, cream slacks, and tan loafers.
