Elk Unknowingly Walks Right Past Photographer as It Does a Mating Call

You may have never heard the term "the rut", but it's basically the mating season for certain mammals, including elk and deer. It can start in September and can last through the winter months. This is when the males strut their stuff looking for females to mate with, and that's what we're seeing here in this video that @WISP shared on Wednesday, September 6th.

In the video, we see a male elk (bull) walking straight for the photographer. It seems that the elk is looking right at him, but then veers off a bit and starts bugling, looking for a nearby female to mate with. The sound of the mating call is so cool to hear!

@WISP writes in their caption, "Crazy how close elk will come to humans" which is what it looked like happened. But on the video's overlay the photographer said that the bull must not have seen him. Didn't see him or didn't care? Who knows...either way that's probably a once in a lifetime experience!

I watched the video several times because the bugling call is so cool. I wasn't the only one who thought so. @DARKxUNICORN said, "Absolutely love that sound" and another commenter added, "Wow awesome"! @Michael Hanion points out, "Probably tame. You are on a ranch", and another commenter added, "Nah he saw, you just weren’t a threat. He looked past you".

@1soulman had my favorite comment because it made me laugh, "Dude your camouflage must be ON POINT." It seems that the bull did see the brave photographer but didn't see him as a threat or sense he was being hunted. That's definitely good for that lucky camera man!
