Downtown New Orleans hotel hosts prom night for LGBTQ+ youth

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) –– The Hyatt Regency New Orleans is hosting Pride Prom Friday night, a special event designed to create a supportive and festive environment for LGBTQ youths where they can express themselves authentically.

“It’s a little bit more than just your standard prom,” said Hyatt Regency New Orleans Commercial Services Associate Director Caitlin Crumbo.

The event is open to people ages 16 to 20 and is an opportunity for LGBTQ+ youth to get a second, or even first, chance at attending prom. “We decided to open it up to those that didn’t have the chance to attend their own high school prom, and they can still come and be a part of the celebration with us,” said Crumbo.

Guests will have the chance to meet with local organizations and learn about resources in housing, health care, counseling and voter registration.

This year’s theme, “All Us In Wonderland, it’s a play on Alice in Wonderland,” said Crumbo. The ballroom is decked out with mushrooms, feathers and a few recognizable characters.

The evening promises dancing, photo opportunities and complimentary food and drinks. The event will also feature performances by renowned local artists The Pussyfooters and Big Freedia.

Something that sets it apart from any other prom is the Strut-Off competition. Attendees strut down the dancefloor, showing off their outfits, and then Big Freedia will help choose the winners to be part of the royal court.

Registration for Pride Prom NOLA 2024 is available at the Pride Prom website. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. on May 24.
