MountainTrue, a grassroots environmental conservation organization that advocates for clean air and water and the conservation of land, is hosting a spring wildflower hike at the Broad River Greenway on Friday.

MountainTrue public lands field biologist, Josh Kelly, and Broad Riverkeeper, David Caldwell, will lead the hike along the downstream trail of the Broad River.

Caldwell will be discussing the value and concerns associated with river, and Kelly will identify flowers, plants and animals encountered on the hike.

"I'll be talking about the value of the Broad River and concerns about the water quality and what we're doing as an organization to improve water quality and improve access on the river," Caldwell said. "And then our field biologist will be joining us and he is very good at identifying flowers and trees and birds.

He said the group will hike the downstream trail, have lunch and hike back.

Participants will meet near the ranger station in the parking lot near the Broad River Greenway, located at 126 Broad River Drive, ranger station at 10:30 a.m. The out and back approximately five mile hike has no elevation change but does have rugged terrain.

Children are welcome on this hike if they can hike five miles. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the duration of the hike. No dogs allowed.

Tickets are $15 for MountainTrue members, $25 for non-members and $5 for children.

Participants should bring sturdy hiking shoes or boots, appropriate outerwear, water, lunch and snacks and, if you have one, a walking stick.

The rain date for the event is April 19. To learn more about the hike and to register, visit MountainTrue on Facebook or their website, mountaintrue.org and click on the event tab.

People can also look out for various upcoming events coming up on the MountainTrue website, including floats, river clean-ups and other volunteer opportunities.
