Things to Consider When Shopping for Bridal Shower Dresses

Venue Location and Time of Year

Just like your wedding dress, when choosing a bridal shower dress, Sabatino says to consider your venue location and the time of year — as well as the general aesthetic of your celebration.

If your shower is in early spring and it’s a little too cold to wear something such as the Lulus Midi Dress or the Daily Practice by Anthropologie Midi Dress, you can always style it with a shawl or a cardigan.

Personal Style

While you might feel a pull between trendy and timeless, Sabatino says to lean into your personal style and find something that feels like an extension of you rather than something too bold or too safe. The best thing about finding  outfits for the events leading up to your nuptials is that you can have some fun without the pressure of choosing a wedding dress all over again.

With that said, it is possible that your bridal style is different from your personal style. So, before you start shopping for your wedding wardrobe, Lucas says to ask yourself: What kind of bride are you? “If you love the romantic aesthetic, lace or florals could be beautiful,” she explains. “But if you prefer a modern and clean look, then something that’s more minimal and sleek would be better aligned with your style.”

Versatility

While the obvious purpose of choosing a bridal shower dress is to wear it to your bridal shower, bridal stylist Francesca DiSpirito recommends looking at versatile dresses that you can wear again — either to other events in your wedding season, on your honeymoon, or after your nuptials.

Dress Style

First and foremost, you want to choose a dress style that you feel comfortable in, as well as something that feels like an extension of your personality. But, if you’re feeling stuck on what styles to look for, DiSpiritor says short or knee-length dresses are very popular hemlines for bridal showers (and you can totally repurpose these as a late-night outfit change at your reception).

“When shopping for their shower, I also find a lot of my brides lean toward A-line skirts,” she adds, noting that most brides want to lean into more feminine styles in their bridal fashion.

Tailoring

No matter what you choose to wear on your bridal shower day, Lucas says don’t settle for a piece that doesn’t fit right. “Tailoring isn’t only important for your wedding gown, it can provide a much better fit for all of your bridal looks, making you feel more confident for all of your wedding events,” she notes.

Take Our Word For It

Jessie Quinn is a contributing commerce writer for PEOPLE and has written for publications such as Byrdie, InStyle, The Spruce, NYLON, and more. To find the best bridal shower dresses, Jessie connected with bridal style experts Julia Sabatino, Francesca DiSpirito, and Sara Lucas to learn more about important factors to look for and consider, including style, fit, and versatility. With their guidance, she researched dozens of bridal shower dress options, carefully considering these factors while also looking at different price ranges. As a result, she curated this list of the best bridal shower dresses for every budget.
