Beartooth Basin, America's Summer Ski Area, Won't Open in 2024

There are a handful of places to make summer lift-served turns in the United States, but only one them considers themselves a 'summer-only' ski area.

Beartooth Basin, Wyoming offers skiing at high elevation from May-July along the Beartooth Highway just over the border from Montana. Unfortunately, the ski area announced today, May 10th, 2024 that they will not open this season. See below.

As mentioned in the caption of the social media post above, Beartooth is not able to open this season due to lack of snow.

The summit reaches 10,900 feet above sea level, usually high enough to hold a deep snowpack well into the summer, but below-average snow and warmer-than-average temperatures are to blame.

Beartooth Basin has had a rough go of it in recent years. They experienced significant mechanical issues with their surface lifts in 2021, did not open in 2022 due to low snowfall, and were forced to close early last year due uncooperative weather.

Regardless of the doom and gloom expressed in the comments section, Beartooth seems optimistic that they will once again welcome skiers to their summer slopes:

"Beartooth Basin will be closed for the 2024 season due to a lack of snow. Here is to hoping to see all your smiling faces next year!"

Mother Nature sure has a way of giving and taking, doesn't she?

Condolences to our friends that frequent Beartooth Basin during May and June. Here's hoping 2025 provides.
