Breckenridge Shocks Colorado Skiers With 'Early' Closing Day Announcement
Breckenridge Ski Resort, Colorado has made an effort in recent years to include itself on the list of ski resorts with the longest seasons in North America, but Winter '23/'24 is ending slightly earlier than some folks were hoping for.
The resort recently announced that this upcoming Sunday, May 12th, 2024 will be the final day of the season. See below for details.
Closing on May 12th might not seem early in the grand scheme of things, but Breck skiers have started to grow accustomed to closing dates closer to Memorial Day.
An Instagram commenter expressed his disappointment considering current conditions. As of May 10th, 2024, Breckenridge has a 76 inch base depth and 340 inches of total snowfall on the season.
Breckenridge responded with an explanation:
"We're always sad to see winter go but it's been a blast! Between the forecast next week, wanting to give our employees some downtime, and getting ready for summer in a month, we felt like this was the best call!"

A spokesperson for Breckenridge provided the following statement from Jon Copeland, VP & COO Breckenridge Ski Resort:
“Every year is different and there are a variety of things we consider when making a decision like this. We do not take these decisions lightly and we always try to balance considerations for both the employee experience and the guest experience. We have taken into account feedback from across our mountain operations teams and ski patrol, and we look at the 15-day forecast, specifically overnight freezing temps, which are very important and impactful to the health of the snowpack this time of year. We’re excited to close out the season with some fun May skiing and riding and we’ll be back at it for summer operations on June 14.”
It's important to note that Breck's late-season offerings have only emerged in the last decade.
The resort used to close at the end of April, but owner and operator Vail Resorts has made a conscious effort to market Breck as a premier May skiing destination.

'Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.' That's the best advice I can give to somebody wishing that the season was longer at Breck.
