Audobon Nature Institute Shares Fascinating Day in the Life of a Penguin Keeper

When you were a kid, did you ever dream about getting to work with animals? I always wanted to be a dolphin trainer at Sea World when I grew up, but unfortunately that didn't happen. But some people do get their dream jobs! Located in New Orleans, Louisiana, Audobon Nature Institute shared a video on Friday, January 11th featuring a day in the life of a penguin keeper, and it looks like fun work to me!

The video starts with the penguin keeper prepping for the day's feedings...lots and lots of fish! Next up is cleaning up and pressure washing the penguin's home, followed by hand feeding each penguin and recording how much they eat (which seems like it would take a lot of time). Then the day ends with the penguin keeper hopping on the computer to record all of the day's feedings. The best part of the video is when Titan shows off his singing skills!

People left some fun comments about @Audubon Nature's video. Of course there were comments about this being a dream job, and I couldn't agree more. One commenter shared, "What a cool job honestly and the penguins make great supervisors!", and Audubon's reply made me laugh, "And so professional! They come dressed in a tux every day! @Knave wondered, "Does anyone get away with getting back in line for an extra food LOL" and Audubon replied, "Some tend to circle back, but we always make sure everyone has eaten!"

Penguin Facts You Might Not Know

I think penguins are absolutely adorable and fun to watch, but I've learned a thing or two about them since I started writing about animals. National Geographic wildlife photographer Bertie Gregory taught me that penguin colonies smell absolutely terrible...penguins stink! My family was at the Georgia Aquarium this past weekend, and I could smell the penguins before I could see them!

Penguins are also very curious, like these two that found a hidden camera - they pulled off the ultimate photobomb!

Penguins love to give each other rocks - it's like giving a special gift. It's also the way that male penguins woo the ladies...the perfect rock is the best gift around!

As we learned in this video, penguins love to eat...they eat about 2 pounds of food each day, and during the winter that is doubled. And those tuxedos penguins where aren't just a fashion statement - the colors help camouflage them from predators, but it also helps them hunt for fish. While swimming, if you look at them from above them their black backs blend into the dark ocean water. If you look at them from below, their white bellies match the bright surface.

Penguins always make me smile! And while it definitely would be a lot of fun to work with them, I don't think being a penguin keeper is the job for me. I don't think I have the patience for all of that record keeping and definitely do not like that smell!
