Amazing Veterinarian Trudged Miles Through Snow To Save a Cat Patient

The Caldwell Animal Clinic in Birmingham, Alabama shared an absolutely wonderful story about one of their patients that needed emergency surgery last week. Birmingham experienced a snowstorm and incredibly icy driving conditions which caused the clinic to close its doors due to the inclement weather.

When one of the patients at the clinic, a five-year-old cat named Blueberry,  took a turn for the worse on Tuesday , veterinarian Dr. Nicole Martin, hiked three miles through the bitter weather in order to operate on the cat.

The Facebook post says in part, "Along with our kennel manager and two technicians that managed to make it to work this morning to care for the boarding and hospitalized patients (as well as get in touch with clients to reschedule appointments and surgeries), here’s a picture of the stoic Dr. Martin who bundled up and hiked over 2 miles to Veteran’s Park to get picked up in order to care for a critical patient at CMAC."

That critical patient was Blueberry, and thanks to this doctor and the staff who were able to operate on Blueberry the cat is now on the way to recovery.

WBRC reports, "Martin talked with the other veterinarians and technicians, since she was the closest, she started out on the three-mile walk from her neighborhood.

“I just happened to be the closest...so at that point we started looking outside, looking at all the ice and we realized there was no way I could get my car out of the driveway and we realized Valleydale was shut down,” says Martin."

The article goes on to quote Dr. Martin with, "We’ve been with her for days at this point in time, realizing how much we loved her and, once we saw the x-rays of what was making her sick, it was just in time we all got together to getting her life saved,” says Martin.

Now this is dedication. What a wonderful practice that went out of their way to care for one of their patients. You just couldn't ask for a better veterinarian and we are so happy that Blueberry is on her way to recovery.

Tips For Finding a Vet For Your Pet

Word of mouth is one of the best tools you have for finding a new veterinarian. Ask your local friends and family who own pets what they like about their vet and what type of care their pet receives.

You can also post on local neighborhood social media sites like NextDoor or your Facebook neighborhood group.

Consider location. You want a vet office you can get to in a hurry if needed. If you have to take public transportation you probably want to find a vet where you won't have to switch trains or buses.

WEB MD suggests you "Arrange a visit to the vet without your pet so you can tour the office. This is a great time to notice if the office is clean and well-organized. You can talk to the staff and see if they seem friendly and helpful. "

Feel free to ask questions like how after-hours emergencies are handled, the cost of a routine check up and whether they offer payment plans.

It's important you feel comfortable with your vet and you feel like your attitude towards pets meshes so you know your fur baby will get the absolute best care they deserve.
