8 Brilliant Hacks To Keep Cats Out of the Christmas Tree

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, the cat climbing up your tree...if you're a cat owner, you know all the lyrics to this traditional Christmas carol. There is nothing as exciting as the Christmas tree to your cat. Unless your cat is well-behaved and adorable and simply curls up under the tree for precious photo ops in which case, you can't sit with us. We are too busy picking tinsel out of the cat's fur.

As frustrating as your feline's adorable little holiday tradition of attacking your Christmas tree is, there are a few ways you can help discourage this Grinchy behavior.

8 Brilliant Hacks To Keep Cats Out of the Christmas Tree

1: Attach your tree to the ceiling

We wrote all about this daring cat last Christmas, but there have been plenty of cat owners who have attached the Christmas tree to their ceiling and not had their cat jump straight upwards to attack it.

2: Hide your tee in an untraditional place

We met these brilliant owners last year who decided to hide their Christmas tree in the shower. Spoiler alert: that did not stop the cat.

3: The old aluminum foil trick

This trick works for a lot of cat owners because cats hate the way aluminum foil feels on their paws.

4: Make your cat their own Christmas tree.

Just make sure you use unbreakable decorations.

5: Make a half tree.

Just remove all the lower branches from your tree and your cat will have no way to climb up it. Bonus, no lower branches means more room for presents!

6: Scare the poor cat to bits.

This owner placed her noisy blender under the tree and as soon as the cat started playing with the tree she turned the blender on, claiming the cat will no longer go near the tree. I really shouldn't laugh, but I can't help it.

7: Use a cat spray deterrent.

You can also place citrus peels around the base of your tree because most cats don't like how those smell either.

8: Try a cat tunnel.

Now this looks super cozy! I can see how this would totally distract a cat.

There are no absolutely foolproof ways to keep your cat out of the tree, but there aways you can make your tree safer for your cats.

Keep your tree free from tinsel. This can be dangerous if your cat eats it. Only use unbreakable ornaments or double-fasten any glass ornaments to your tree. Make sure your kitty doesn't gnaw on any light cords. Secure your tree to the wall or ceiling so if your cat does decide to climb the tree it won't fall down on them.

Christmas should be a fun, festive and safe time for all, including your cat. Let's hope they leave the tree alone and find something else to play with.. like the hanging Christmas stockings!
