Vivian Howard Forages for Ramps on 'A Chef's Life'
If you’re hating the cold, Sunday’s episode of A Chef’s Life on PBS is sure to warm you up. The show, which follows North Carolina chef Vivian Howard, recalls a considerably less snowy time of year: the few short weeks in early spring when ramps, a pungent wild onion, are in season.
"We had the opportunity to go ‘hunting’ for ramps," Howard says in the promo above, before clarifying: "Actually what we’re doing is foraging for ramps.”
It’s interesting, then, that the dish she later concocts is not a veggie-forward spring dish, but a hearty take on steak and potatoes. At least one of her guests calls her out on it.
"You know why I ordered this, don’t you?" the man, identified only as Joe, asks Howard. “‘Cause you said you’d never fix it.”
"Joe, I’ve made a career of doing things I said I would never do," Howard quips back. Check your local PBS listings to find out when it airs in your neck of the woods.
