Meghan McCain defends heated debates: ‘No disrespect, but a lot of people have failed’ on ‘The View’

Meghan McCain couldn’t avoid getting into some “hot topics” during her appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Tuesday night.

Rocking a gold sequin skirt and eyeshadow to match, the outspoken The View co-host was asked to weigh in on the just-announced Donald Trump impeachment inquiry as well as the president’s Twitter feud with Chrissy Teigen.

Of the former, McCain remained cautious, saying that “Democrats are gonna have to win over Republicans on this one” but acknowledged that Trump’s dealings with Ukraine “should be investigated.”

She went on to reiterate her defense of former White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s Dancing with the Stars turn, calling it “punishment enough.”

“He used to be very well-respected in politics and now he’s doing this,” she said.

And of Trump’s bashing of Chrissy Teigen as “foul-mouthed” in a recent tweet, McCain took the model and cookbook author’s side.

“You know what, he hates humor and he hates anything that’s classy in any way, and I’m a foul-mouthed wife,” she told Cohen, while fellow guest Kelly Dodd of The Real Housewives of Orange County can be heard adding, “I can’t stand him.”

“I’m just so sick of his Twitter in general, as I think most of America is,” McCain added.

The talk show personality, whose sister-in-law served as the show’s guest bartender, was also grilled about her infamous on-camera confrontations on The View. McCain claimed that sparring with co-hosts Joy Behar and Ana Navarro will “roll off” her back quickly, but cited her recent debate with guest Pamela Anderson over Julian Assange as more upsetting because she felt the actress was “spewing propaganda.”

“People that are, like, saying dangerous things on the show, that’s a whole different thing,” she said.

Her sometimes heated debates are a family trait, she said, noting the late Sen. John McCain’s “horrible temper.”

“For me, it’s passion,” she added. “No disrespect, but a lot of people have failed at my chair on the show. And I am on my third year. It’s the longest since Elisabeth [Hasselbeck, former View co-host and fellow conservative], thank you very much. And I think part of it is because I’m a true believer. I take it seriously.

“For me, these are really intense times and I feel a huge responsibility to represent conservatives and Republicans, even though I’m not a Trumper,” she continued, adding that she wishes The View producers would allow more time to get into the show’s controversial “hot topics.”

“I have good days and bad days,” she shared. “But we’re winning the ratings war by a long shot.”
