Kate Middleton is known to create her children’s birthday cakes — and has said she wouldn’t have it any other way!

Princess Kate and Prince William are celebrating the 6th birthday of their youngest son, Prince Louis, on April 23, and the festivities might include a homemade birthday cake by Kate.

"I love making the cake," the Princess of Wales, 42, said on A Berry Royal Christmas in 2019. "It's become a bit of a tradition that I stay up 'til midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing, and I make far too much. But I love it."

Over the summer, the royal mom asked Great British Baking Show finalist Alice Fevronia for advice about icing and brought up her hobby of baking her children’s birthday cakes during the Big Tea Party for the 75th birthday of the National Health Service. The Prince and Princess of Wales both participated in a dessert tutorial at the event and helped decorate cupcakes.

"The princess was actually asking a lot of baking tips like, ‘How did you get the buttercream so smooth?' " Fevronia told PEOPLE in July 2023. "She mentioned that she'd been up quite late on a couple of occasions trying to decorate the kids' birthday cakes."

Princess Kate also wanted to know "about how to get the sides of the cake straight and smooth," Fevronia said. "I used to be a teacher, so I went into teacher mode. I was like, 'Right, this is what you need to do.' "

The Baking Show alum also joked that it was clear Princess Kate was more of a decorative expert than her husband!

"The prince’s piping skills were less good than the princess's, shall we say," Fevronia told PEOPLE about Prince William's attempts at decorating.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have both spoken about cooking and baking with their children and released an upbeat video of Princess Kate making cupcakes with Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis during Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee festivities in June 2022.

"Baking cakes for the local community in Cardiff to enjoy at a Platinum Jubilee street party taking place today! 🎉, " the royal couple captioned the clip on Instagram. "We hope you like them! 🧁"

The montage of photos showed Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis busy in the kitchen, which was decorated with a Union Jack banner, as they helped their mom make vanilla cupcakes.

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were also previously credited with creating a cake shared on social media in 2021 for Mother's Day in the U.K. The treat was decorated with icing, sprinkles, candy pieces and hearts made out of colorful pipe cleaners.

On April 23, the Prince and Princess of Wales continued another tradition by releasing a new portrait for Prince Louis’ birthday. Ever since Prince George was a baby, the couple has shared a photo with the public to celebrate their children's big days each year.

While Prince Louis’ 6th birthday photo marked a return to one tradition, it was also a break with another. The young royal was all smiles in the sunny shot showing him lying on a blanket in the grass (and missing a tooth!), which PEOPLE understands was taken by Princess Kate in Windsor. The royal mom was credited with taking the image, marking her first birthday portrait of one of her children in nearly a year. While the Princess of Wales hopped behind the camera for Princess Charlotte’s 8th birthday portrait released in May 2023, photographer Millie Pilkington took Prince George’s 10th birthday photo, published in July 2023.

Prince Louis’ latest birthday portrait was unusually released on his actual birthday instead of his birthday eve. Prince William and Princess Kate have historically released their children’s birthday photos on the day before their birthday, so the April 23 circulation came as a change.

It was unclear whether the royal parents would share a new picture for Louis’ birthday amid the family’s appeal for privacy as Princess Kate undergoes treatment for cancer. PEOPLE understands that the Prince and Princess of Wales decided to release the image to thank well-wishers who have sent Prince Louis a happy birthday.
