Pixar is expecting a big summer with the upcoming release of Inside Out 2 from director Kelsey Mann, who takes on the mammoth task of stepping back inside the mind of Riley almost a decade on from where we left her in Inside Out.

Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen's 2015 gem stole the hearts of critics and audiences and secured itself #167 on IMDb's list of the top 250 films of all time.

Now, we are set to reunite with her steadfast emotions of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust with a few new adolescent guests: Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment.

But there was supposed to be another new addition to Riley's evergrowing wealth of emotions: Shame.

Mann told TheWrap that the version of the film with Shame "was not fun to watch". She said, "It was too heavy. You know when you see a good movie and you're like, 'Man that was a great movie.' You want to see it again? 'No, not really.' There are movies like that."

Mann said that wasn't the movie she wanted to make. "I want to make a movie that's really meaningful," she said. "When you're asked, 'Do you want to see that movie again?' You say, 'Yes!' Because those are my favorite movies." Mann also said, "I did not want to return to that movie with that character. It's not that funny."

There was a version of the movie with nine new emotions, according to TheWrap, one of which was guilt.

"I did like the design of [guilt]," Jason Deamer, an art director and character designer at Pixar, told TheWrap.

Deamer says the essence of those removed feelings is not absent from the film. "This movie has always been about dealing with the feeling that you're not good enough," Deamer said, "We still have that element, that shame element in there."

How that will manifest will be revealed upon the film's release on June 14, 2024.
